Condos in Jamaica Plain
Jamaica Plain—often simply referred to as “JP”—is one of Boston’s many neighborhoods with a rich history. Becoming it’s own town during the mid-1850s, Jamaica Plain was annexed to Boston only a few decades later in the 1870s. Today, this unique neighborhood is home to just under 40,000 residents (according to the 2000 U.S. Census). The neighborhood’s residents are a diverse bunch, representing college students, educated professionals, political activists, and artists.
Famous for it’s green space, JP is home to much of Boston’s Emerald Necklace, a park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted during the 19th century. The Emerald Necklace includes Olmsted Park, Franklin Park, the Arnold Arboretum, and Jamaica Pond. Franklin Park, the largest of the parks, is home to the biggest zoo in New England. Each outdoor park is connected by a parkway know as the Arborway, the Jamaicaway, and the Riverway. Finally, JP is home to the Forest Hills Cemetery, which adds another stretch of green space to the area and is often called the “garden cemetery.”
Since the 1980s, the real estate market in JP has driven the conversion of homes into condominiums, thus allowing for some reasonably-priced residential options. Condos and other residences are available in each of JP’s districts, which include Forest Hills, Hyde Square, Jamaica Hills, South Street, Woodbourne, and many more.
